Your first job search in a new country: start before you feel ready

Confidence tends to follow action, not the other way around.

Job searching in an unfamiliar market is uncomfortable. The formats, expectations and unspoken rules may all be different from what you know. The most common mistake is waiting until you feel ready.

Learn the local format

CV conventions vary between countries. Look at examples from your target industry, use your university careers service if you have one, and adapt rather than translate.

Talk to people before you apply

Short, respectful conversations with people already doing the work will teach you the vocabulary of the industry faster than any job description.

Every application teaches you something, even the ones that go nowhere.

Track what you learn

Keep a simple log of applications, responses and feedback. Patterns appear quickly, and they tell you what to change.
