Using AI tools to learn, not to skip learning

The same tool can make you sharper or make you dependent. The difference is how you use it.

AI assistants can explain, summarise, quiz and critique. Used well, they are patient tutors available at any hour. Used poorly, they produce work you cannot explain and knowledge you do not own.

Ask it to question you

Instead of asking for an answer, ask the tool to test your understanding. Explain a concept in your own words and ask it to find the gaps. Retrieval practice is one of the most reliable ways to learn.

Check everything that matters

AI tools can be confidently wrong. Use them to generate leads, then verify facts, figures and citations against reliable sources.

If you could not explain the work without the tool, the tool did the learning, not you.

Know your institution's rules

Universities and employers have different policies on AI use. Read them, follow them, and when in doubt, ask.
