Proof of address when you've just arrived

A common catch-22 for newcomers, and the documents that often help.

Many services ask for proof of address, but getting documents with your address on them often requires those same services. This is a common frustration for new arrivals.

Documents that are often accepted

  • A signed tenancy agreement.
  • A letter from your university or employer confirming your address.
  • Council tax correspondence or a utility bill in your name.
  • Official government letters.

Practical tips

Ask your university or employer early — many have a standard letter. Keep digital and printed copies of everything with your name and address. Each organisation decides what it accepts, so ask before you visit.
