Opening a UK bank account

What banks usually ask for, and what to do while you wait.

A UK bank account makes it easier to receive wages, pay rent and avoid international transaction fees. Requirements vary between banks and change over time.

What banks commonly ask for

  • Proof of identity, usually a passport and, for many international students, immigration documents.
  • Proof of address in the UK.
  • For students, sometimes a letter from your university confirming enrolment.

Compare before you choose

Look at monthly fees, overdraft terms, international transfer costs and whether the bank's app works well for you. Some digital banks have simpler application processes; check whether they meet your needs.

While you wait

Keep enough accessible money for your first weeks and be careful with large cash amounts. Be alert to scams: banks will not ask for your full password or PIN by phone or message.
