Guides Studying Abroad

Adjusting to life in a new country

Culture shock, homesickness and finding your footing.

Adjustment rarely follows a straight line. Many people experience an exciting start, a difficult middle and a gradual settling.

Expect the dip

Feeling low a few months in is common and does not mean you made the wrong choice. Naming the experience makes it easier to manage.

Build routines

  • Regular sleep, meals and movement steady everything else.
  • Join one group based on an interest, not just on nationality or course.
  • Explore your area on foot; familiarity builds comfort.

Ask for help early

Universities and many employers offer wellbeing and counselling services. If you are struggling, reaching out is a strength, not a failure. In an emergency, call 999; for urgent medical advice, NHS 111 is available.
